Both parts of this training-course took place in Zaporizhzhia. The educational program was the similar to previous courses in Kharkiv and Dnipro.
As before, during the first module, participants repeated the basics of storytelling and working with hypothesis, learned how to choose topics, storylines and characters for investigations and how to use different databases and registries.
During the whole month after the first module participants worked on their own investigations in hometowns. Second module covered the specifics of TV-journalism and video reporting in investigations, the legal basis of work and risks of investigators, legislation on access to public information, fundraising and programs to support investigators, segregation of duties and job security. Also, a significant amount of time was dedicated to presentations and discussions of materials, prepared by participants between the modules as homework. Together in group they sought ways to improve materials, to prove their hypotheses, to refute possible false statements, etc.
The subjects for investigations were very different, for example, the abscess of tendering process in the construction of a pool at the university, the involvement of high-rank officials in unidentified accidents, tenders in front-line towns, "elite" lifestyle of the officials, massive poisoning of children in schools, the arrangement of living places for internally displaced persons and many others.
Very interesting was practical session with famous video-operator Kyryll Shapar. He described what recording equipment to use if you do not have a lot of resources and provided tips on how to work with videos and use visual effects, such as fader, sound, image, captions and subtitles, online storage and transmission services. The ways of recording phone conversations were also discussed. Participants were familiarized with such programs as Audacity, Apple Garage Band, Sound Force, Pinnacle Studio, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro, Avidemux, Edius and others.
Multimedia session was grounded on the Pulitzer Award winner article about snow avalanche – Snow Fall / The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek, whose author John Branch showed the real ability to impress readers.
This group presented the most investigative materials – 17.
The training-course was organized within the "Investigative Journalism – the Arrowhead of Transparency" project in cooperation with a German organization "Europäische Medien Initiative e.V." using the German Federal Foreign Office resources.
