Working with traumatized people: in Kharkiv participants learned the basics of providing psychosocial assistance in emergencies and crises

On July 31 – August 2, the training "Psychological First Aid and Crisis Intervention" was implemented in Kharkiv. The trainers: Olena Sudakova – a medical psychologist-psychotherapist, PhD in Psychology, and Iryna Tkach – clinical psychologist and trauma therapist. The training was attended by 25 people from different regions of Ukraine – specialists related to psychosocial recovery and psychological assistance.
On the first day, consideration of the method "Psychological First Aid" began. While performing the "Simulation" exercise, 6 persons from the territories where the armed conflict takes place, eagerly shared their own experience, which improved the dynamics of the exercise and increased the participants' motivation. During the first day, the participants mastered 7 exercises, namely: "Interaction", "Mountain", "Explosion at the factory simulation", "Who, where, when", "Brainstorm", "Bridge".
The second day began with a reflection, the consideration and mastering of the PFA method was completed and with the practical and theoretical transition the work with the "Crisis Intervention" method was started. "Intervention boundaries" exercise was implemented to switch between the methods.
As a result of the second day, participants learned 10 exercises and role-plays, while the third day was devoted to studying and drawing a boundary line between methods, consideration of cases-examples in the end, and the most common mental reactions of people to a crisis situation were considered.
"Among the positive effects, the high level of group's motivation and its high pace should be noted. Therefore, educational block on providing psychosocial assistance in emergencies and crises during the COVID-19 outbreak was added to the training program", the trainers summed up.
The training-course was implemented within the "Crisis prevention and Peace building in Ukraine – Time to Act!" project, supported with German Federal Foreign Office’s funds by IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), Funding programme zivik.
